STANDARDS-BASED MODEL

About Us
Richard Zagranski and Bill Whigham have over 75 years experience as teachers and administrators in elementary, middle, and high school education. They have a demonstrated dedication and commitment to education.

Richard has an MA in English from the University of Massachusetts and has been a presenter at the University of Massachusetts and Mount Holyoke College. In addition, he has been an adjunct instructor at Holyoke Community College and Fitchburg State College. He has provided in-service professional development programs throughout New England.

Bill has an MS from the University of Massachusetts School of Education and has served as co-chairman of the District Curriculum Council and spearheaded the transition from the traditional to the standards-based model of education for the South Hadley Public Schools. Bill has also served as an adjunct faculty member at Springfield College and Fitchburg State College.

They have spent the last five years combining their expertise, experience, current research, and best practices to develop their new text, Understanding Standards-Based Education. In addition, they have worked closely with teachers and school districts in helping them to implement the elements of the standards-based model.

Much of their work has centered around simplifying the standards-based model so that teachers and administrators may be able to use the tools contained in the book immediately in their daily practice.

Both men are very excited about their new book, Understanding Standards-Based Education, which takes the mystery out of the Standards-Based Model of Education which is sweeping the country. No more guesswork! Everything is written in an easy to understand style, and the book is filled with many tools so it can be used immediately. Loaded with examples, templates, checklists, and rubrics, the book is a resource that should be on every teacher's desk and in the home of any parent who has a student in school.

The real purpose of the book is to create a community of learning where all of the parties - teachers, administrators, parents - are all on the same page interacting for the benefit of the student learner.

There's a clear set of expectations as well as a step-by-step process which shows readers how to take a standard, transform it into a performance objective, and design a corresponding assessment piece.

There are standards-based guidelines and action plans; ready-to-use charts, rubrics, and templates; real-world examples and assessment methods; step-by-step instructions to ensure sustainability; and chapter summaries and a glossary for easy reference.

Understanding Standards-Based Education leads educators through a well-defined course of curriculum revision and presents all participants with specific, need-to-know information for accomplishing goals.
